7-Ingredient Steak Tortas

Ingredients
  

Steak
  • 1 lb sirloin steak
  • 1 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 lime, halved
Tortas
  • 6 hoagie rolls split open, toasted if desired
  • 1 (15-ounce) can refried beans warmed
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded montery jack cheese about 6 ounces
  • 2 vine-ripened tomatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
  • as needed sliced avocado, pickled or raw red onions, pickled jalapeños, and hot sauce for serving (optional)

Method
 

  1. Season the sirloin steak with chili powder, cumin, garlic salt, and black pepper. Squeeze lime juice over the steak.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the steak for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, or to your desired doneness. Let the steak rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly.
  3. Spread mayonnaise on the split sides of the hoagie rolls.
  4. Layer the bottom half of each roll with warmed refried beans, sliced steak, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, sliced tomatoes, and shredded lettuce.
  5. Top with the other half of the roll. Serve immediately with optional toppings like avocado, red onions, jalapeños, and hot sauce.
